PHOENIX – It was just last week that rapper DMX talked to FOX 10 about how he had changed his life for the better, but he has now been arrested for a probation violation of failing to submit to a drug test. He speaks with FOX 10 exclusively about a slip-up that led to his arrest.

When FOX 10 News spoke to rapper DMX before his concert in Scottsdale, he said, “I know that if I was to get like caught driving without my license it would be on the news instantly, and I’d be persecuted (prosecuted) to the fullest extent of the law.”

But things changed this week, because DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, spoke exclusively to FOX 10′s Britt Moreno from inside jail on Saturday.

DMX was released from jail this past summer. One week ago, he told FOX 10 he read the Bible in jail and wrote music. His single, “Ya’ll Don’t Really Know,” was just released.

The first two lines say: “Sky’s the limit, so I’m reaching for the stars. I’m tired of being that guy that they keep behind bars.”

He said he wrote the lyrics while he was incarcerated and never expected he would be sent back to jail.

Wearing pink, stripes and handcuffs, DMX spoke from Lower Buckeye Jail.

At one point the rapper topped the music charts, but his music career was derailed after he was arrested multiple times.

Last week, DMX said he was hoping for a new beginning. He was just three weeks away from completing an 18-month substance abuse program. But at his concert, he said he took a swig of alcohol that landed him back in jail.

“And I realize I shouldn’t have done it. I wasn’t done with the program. They let me out. I should have protected myself better,” DMX said Saturday.

Court papers show that DMX was arrested for a slew of charges, including probation violation, ongoing use of cocaine, use of Oxycontin without a prescription and failing to submit to drug testing, to name a few.

“I’ve done everything they have asked me to do — complete programs, pay fines, community service,” DMX said. “It’s rare that I get fair treatment … It’s love or hate.”

As he waits for a hearing scheduled next week, DMX said the support of his family and fans keeps him going.

“I’m going to get through this. Thank you for the support and the love. And I won’t let you down,” he said.

Next week, a judge will decide whether DMX will go back to rehab or back to prison.
