AZ Hustlers celebrates new deal with UGK Records with lively signing/album release party
Tucson, Ariz.- Bottles popped, champagne toasted and everybody in the place had a good time as Tucson, Ariz. native sons AZ Hustlers celebrated signing to the legendary UGK Records label during their Antidote album release party just weeks ago at Tucson’s DV8 nightclub.
The party was attended by fellow UGK Records artists XVII and Gel as well as VP of Operations Byron Amos, Little Corey, the son of the late UGK Records founder Chad “Pimp C” Butler, label CEO Weslyn “Mama Wes” Monroe, who is also Pimp C’s mother and her husband “Pops.”
“We had a good time,” says Lil V, one-half of AZ Hustlers. “A lot of family, friends, and people from the streets came to show support.”
The party will be followed by the early 2011 release of their highly anticipated Vista/ UGK Records album Southwest Kingz, which is set to feature several fellow UGK Records artists and major label recording artists.
“To be a part of the legacy of Pimp C’s UGK Records is not only an honor but a blessing,” explains V. “We grew up listening to Pimp and Bun. It’s an honor to be on a record label who’s founder set the foundation of Southern rap music.”
Made up of first cousins Lil V and Young Bam , they first became associated with Pimp C while planning to get him to feature on their album. Lifelong fans of the group UGK started by Pimp C and Bernard “Bun-B” Freeman two decades ago, they couldn’t wait to make music with the Southern superstar. But before they could get in the studio to record, the untimely passing of Pimp C on December 4, 2007 would forever impede the recording. They never got the chance to record with the legend.
After hearing rumors all over the Internet that Pimp C had passed, they called Mama Wes and were given the shocking confirmation that indeed he had passed. Mama then asked if they would come down to attend the funeral. After a 19-hour drive to Port Arthur, Texas from Arizona, V and Bam paid their final respects alongside thousands of friends, family and fans. The family connection was undenible and has been strong ever since.
