Crowd was waiting to hear LA hip-hop artist

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — An altercation outside a nightclub where a rap artist was scheduled to appear erupted in shooting, leaving 14 people wounded, including two in serious condition, police said Saturday. Police said the shooting was gang-related, and they arrested a suspect who was in a car that they stopped as it was leaving the scene. They are still looking for two other men as possible suspects. The man taken into custody is facing 14 counts of aggravated assault and one count of assisting a criminal street gang, and he may face additional charges. The suspect was not identified.

Police said they think a fight broke out between two groups waiting in line for a rap music concert by Los Angeles hip-hop artist, Nipsey Hussle, who is also a self-proclaimed member of the Crips gang. They said the fight quickly escalated to gunfire and that at least 250 people were outside the venue at the time.

“My heart just dropped. I could really feel my body. I didn’t know what to do. I did what everyone else was doing, just jumping on the ground,” said shooting witness Calvin Casteel. The day after finding himself in the midst of a mass shooting, Casteel retraced the steps he took to avoid the gunfire.
“I just kind of got down in that corner right there, and there was people all laying around me right there,” Casteel said. At 11:30 p.m., police believe three gang members opened fire after the fight. In 2007, a similar situation occurred when two men shot and killed a 19-year-old because of a fight. “We can only do so much as a police department. We’ve had extra presence at that location. We’ve been there. We can’t do it all, and business does have a responsibility,” said Tempe Police Lt. Mike Horne. Casteel is happy to hear all 14 victims survived, but he won’t soon forget their fearful screams. “It was sad, because you could hear people screaming. They were like all, yelling, like, ‘Please help me.” Hussle has had several incidents at his shows, including a shooting that occurred in Tucson just two days ago. Tempe police Sgt. Steve Carbajal said the suspects fled after the shooting, which occurred at about 11:30 p.m. in the parking lot of The Clubhouse Music Venue. Police had only a vague description of the other two suspects — two black men wearing dark clothing who ran away from the club on East Broadway Road, located about 7 miles east of downtown Phoenix. Two of the injured were hospitalized in serious condition, while the others had non-life-threatening injuries.
Hussle never took the stage, but tweeted after the shooting: “Az….y’all gotta be cool man. This … ain’t rite.” A phone call and email to his publicist weren’t immediately returned. Four hours after the shooting, the parking lot was virtually empty with only police activity apparent. All entrances to the club’s parking lot were cordoned off with tape, and squad cars were posted around the area. The website for the business — located in a strip mall within two miles of Arizona State University’s main campus in Tempe — says it’s been in operation for six years — hosting music shows nightly for all age groups.
Police said they are checking to see if the club had used the appropriate amount of security to keep concertgoers safe. The police’s crime prevention unit has met previously with the management to put measures in place to minimize violence after another incident at the club. Calls to the club went unanswered early Saturday.
